About BusinessBuilder

Structural clarity for founder-led businesses

BusinessBuilder helps founders see how their business actually works—how the parts fit together and where the pressure is—before they decide what to change.

Bruce (Jack) Russell

Bruce is an Australian founder and adviser who works with founder-led small and medium businesses. He wrote The Founder’s Trap: Why Working Harder Stops Working and built BusinessBuilder on a simple conviction: most founders don’t need more jargon or hype. They need an accurate picture of how their business works before deciding what to change.

While Bruce’s MBA gave him a formal grounding in strategy, his real lessons came from decades spent building and guiding businesses through the challenges every founder faces — including margin erosion, customer dependence, competitive sameness, and the relentless grind of working harder without making real progress. Those skills were honed as he guided large corporate business units through change and turnaround, and through his own small-business startups.

How we work

Evidence firstEvery finding is tied to the evidence you supply. Where the evidence is thin, we say so rather than fill the gap with a guess.
Boutique by designWe take four Snapshot Reviews a week. AI tools help with the groundwork, and Bruce checks and approves every Snapshot Review before it reaches you.
Plain languageWe explain every term we use, and we lead with what it means for your business. No scores for their own sake—just the question to resolve before your next move.
